Panel 3: Stigma abroad
The Victims of The War by Gela Jincharadze
Like anywhere else in the world, in low and middle-income countries people with a mental illness are severely stigmatized and excluded from society.
Rob Keukens, Mental Health Consultant at GIP-Hilversum and transcultural psychiatrist Douwe van der Heide will speak about their work in countries in the former Soviet Union, in Sri Lanka, Curacao and South Africa. Nino Agdgomelashvili, Project manager at GIP-Tbilisi, will talk about fighting stigma in Georgia and how art can contribute to effective anti-stigma campaigns.

Project manager GIP – Tbilisi
Nino Agdgomelashvili worked in various fields related to care for vulnerable groups since 1989. She worked for the Association for People in Need of Special Care and was the director of the Georgian Mental Health Coalition. Currently she is a project manager of GIP-Tbilisi.

Nino Agdgomelashvili has a medical degree from Tbilisi State Medical Institute and a diploma in Psychiatry from the Institute of Psychiatry in Georgia. After graduation, she began clinical work in in-patient and later out-patient clinics. She has also done extensive work in the field of psychosocial rehabilitation and psycho-traumatology (with refugees, prisoners, victims of violence). Nowadays she, together with GIP-Tbilisi team, works on structural changes of mental health field in Caucasus. She has written and edited a variety of books and articles in her primary fields of interest. Nino Agdgomelashvili also serves as Coordinator of the Public Monitoring Council of Human Rights Practices in Psychiatric and Social Care Institutions of Georgia and Chairperson of the Georgian Society of Psychotrauma.

Douwe van der Heide
Douwe van der Heide is transcultural psychiatrist at De Gelderse Roos in Wolfheze, the Netherlands. He started his career as a general doctor in Zimbabwe and has in recent years been involved in fact finding missions for GIP in Sri Lanka and Bangla Desh.

Rob Keukens
Rob Keukens teaches at the University for Applied Sciences Hogeschool Arnhem en Nijmegen and consults with GIP. He is specialized in educating nurses in Child & Adolescent Psychiatry and Community Mental Health. For GIP he has been involved in mental health nursing, multi-disciplinary teamwork and assessments of mental health systems. Rob Keukens has a degree in Teaching from Maastricht University, has published books and articles on mental health issues and is a member of the editorial boards of a number of mental health nursing journals.

Art Brut/Outsider Art

Art Brut, literally “Raw Art”, is a label created by French painter Jean Dubuffet to describe art created outside the boundaries of official culture. Dubuffet focused particularly on the art of the insane. In 1972 art critic Roger Cardinal coined the term Outsider Art as English synonym for Art Brut.
Vorige edities festival
In 2003 werd in Toronto het Madness & Arts World Festival opgericht door het Workman Theatre Project of Ontario, het Centre for Addiction and Mental Health in samenwerking met Harbourfront Centre en Sycorax. De 1e editie van het festival wilde vooral een podium bieden aan internationale kunstenaars en performers met een psychiatrische achtergrond. Drie jaar later werd het stokje overgegeven aan Münster (Duitsland, 2006) voor de 2e editie.
Tegelijkertijd vonden in Nederland drie succesvolle edities van het Kwartiermakersfestival plaats, een meerdaags cultureel festival dat de beeldvorming rond psychiatrie wil verbeteren. Initiatiefnemer was RODAS, de toenmalige dagbestedingsafdeling van De Geestgronden. De insteek van het Kwartiermakersfestival was concreet, positief en laagdrempelig. Integratie was het uitgangspunt, dat zowel in de organisatie, in de activiteiten als in het publiek werd nagestreefd.
Jannet Bonset heeft als projectleider met het Kwartiermakersfestival de basis gelegd voor het Madness & Arts Festival in Haarlem. In 2008 maakte zij met de organisatoren van de edities in Toronto en Munster de afspraak om de derde editie in Haarlem te laten plaatsvinden.

Museum of Everything

James Brett, collector of Outsider Art and initiator of the Museum Of Everything in London, will be in conversation with Rolf Quaghebeur, freelance curator and artistic advisor at Vlaams Bouwmeester, and Jos ten Berge, lecturer in Art History and Cultural Studies at the Free University of Amsterdam (VU) and chairman of the Foundation Collection De Stadshof, an internationally renowned collection of Outsider Art that is currently on loan to the Museum Dr. Guislain in Ghent, Belgium.

Museum of Everything
Filmmaker and collector of outsider art James Brett is the initiator of the Museum of Everything in London. The small, independent Museum of Everything, housed in a former recording studio in Primrose Hill, is Britain’s first museum devoted entirely to artists ‘living outside modern society’, a genre which has inspired artists like Jean Dubuffet. Brett’s museum represents one of the least travelled areas of art collecting – the world of the insane and the outsider.

With the opening of his museum, Brett brought the ‘outside’ in. The Museum of Everything opened its doors last October, timed to coincide with London’s Frieze Art Fair. Thereupon, the museum became one of Frieze’s ‘must attend’ events; its exhibition of art by the untrained, unintentional and undiscovered creators of society, with work by Henry Darger, George Widener, James Castle and dozens more, attracted 15,000 visitors in one month. And for this year’s Frieze too, Brett is planning a new show: the Museum of Everything returns to London for Exhibition # 3. Sir Peter Blake, collector par excellence and founding father of British Pop Art, will come to the Museum of Everything and reveal some of his discoveries for the first time. In addition to that, Exhibition # 3 will also recreate one of the unknown marvels of Victorian England: Mr Potter’s Museum of Curiosities.
ROLF QUAGHEBEUR

Rolf Quaghebeur is freelance curator and artistic advisor at Vlaams Bouwmeester, a Flemish Government Architect Team based in Brussels. Art and psychiatry is a topic that has fascinated him for a long time. During his time at S.M.A.K. he curated divers exhibitions dealing with the relation of arts and psychiatry, such as Y.E.L.L.O.W Contemporary Arts and Psychiatry (Geel, 2001).

Rolf Quagebeur’s is recently curating the exhibition disturbed SILENCE – STILTE gestoord which opened at the beginning of September at the Psychiatric Centre St Norbert in Duffel, Belgium. St Norbert is a well-known clinic for adults with different psychological and psychiatric problems (from people with personal problems to severe psychiatric disorders). Drawing on contemporary art, the exhibition explores the concept of ‘tranquility’ in the specific context of the ‘healing environment’ of the psychiatric centre. The exhibition is approached from three site-specific angles: the sacred, the spatial (psychiatry, insanity and also the physical space) and lastly the corporeal.

JOS TEN BERGE
Free University of Amsterdam (VU)/Collection de Stadshof
Jos ten Berge is lecturer in Art History and Cultural Studies at the Free University of Amsterdam (VU). Besides his specialisation in Modern and Contemporary Art, his fields of study are Outsider Art as well as Drugs and Art. The focus of Jos ten Berge’s Ph.D. thesis Drugs in Art. From Opium to LSD, 1798-1968 is on the arguments adduced for the use of drugs (often variants of primitivism), their influence on the creative process, and the consequences for the life and work of the artist. This has resulted in a number of separate studies of the aesthetics of the opium trance, the hash rage of the 1840s, morphine addiction as an expression of decadence, the effects of addiction on the life and work of Kirchner and Cocteau, the effect of psychedelic drugs on the creative process, the biological determination of (drug-induced) visions and hallucinations, and the ability of some of the new media to produce ecstasy. ‘Ecstatic art’ displays similarities with trance states, media art and the work of some psychiatric patients, categories that are classified as Outsider Art because they arise outside the regular art circuit. The history of how people deal with these arts is a second research area.
Jos ten Berge
Besides his teaching activity, Jos ten Berge is chairman of the Foundation Collection de Stadshof, an internationally renowned collection of Outsider Art that is currently on loan to the Museum Dr. Guislain in Ghent, Belgium. Before, the collection resided in the Museum De Stadshof in Zwolle, the Netherlands. The Foundation Collection De Stadshof owns and manages an important collection of art in the field of Outsider Art, the only collection of its kind in the Netherlands.

Hoe geven kunstenaars de (eigen) waanzin een plek in hun werk en hoe beïnvloedt dat ons denken over mensen met een psychische stoornis?
Panel 2: Stereotypes in Fiction
Batman series
Literature and film present specific images of psychiatrists and patients. Just how far does those images confirm or question the clichés about psychiatrists and patients? How far do they promote or counter stigmatisation? These questions will be considered on the basis of fragments from several popular films.
The guests include Samuel Shem, author of the well-known hospital satire The House of God, Christel Grimbergen, psychiatrist in training at Arkin, Amsterdam, and Rob Houtepen, lecturer in Ethics and Philosophy in the Department Metamedica of Maastricht University. Samuel Shem will talk about Mike Figgis’ Leaving Las Vegas (1995) in which an alcoholic (played by Nicolas Cage) drinks himself to death, in relation to his own play about the Alcoholists Anonynimus, called Bill W. and Dr. Bob.
SAMUEL SHEM
Psychiatrist and author of The House of God
Samuel Shem is also the author of Mount Misery (1996), a novel about psychiatric residency at a mental hospital of that name, Fine (1986), a novel about a psychoanalyst and The Spirit of the Place (2008). Two of Shem’s plays, Room For One Woman and Napoleon’s Dinner have been published in The Short Plays anthologies. With his wife, Janet Surrey, he is the author of Bill W. and Dr. Bob, a play about the relationship between the two men who founded Alcoholics Anonymous, which was named one of the ‘ten best plays’ of the season in San Diego, is published and represented by Samuel French and was an Off Broadway hit with 148 performances at the New World Stages in 2007. Bill W. and Dr. Bob and Shem and Surrey were awarded the 2007 Performing Arts Award by the National Council on Alcoholism and Drug Dependence.

Rob Houtepen is a lecturer in Ethics and Philosophy in the Department Metamedica of Maastricht University. He has written on film for the Tijdschrift voor Gezondheidszorg en Ethiek and currently covers the section ‘Beelden’ in the Maandblad Geestelijke Volksgezondheid (MGv). At the end of 2010 he will open a website, www.filmethiek.nl, which will focus on humanist film criticism.

Genezingsobjecten voor de geest: Fetisjen uit Togo en Benin

Wanneer iemands leven ernstig wordt verstoord door verschijningen of stemmen, dan is dat in onze optiek al gauw een geval voor de psycholoog of psychiater. Het geloof in geesten is voor de meesten van ons moeilijk in overeenstemming te brengen met het logisch-rationele denken dat in onze cultuur de boventoon voert. Voor miljoenen inwoners van de West-Afrikaanse landen Togo en Benin ligt dit anders. In hun beleving is de werkelijkheid een complex geheel van levende krachten en geesten die overal en altijd aanwezig zijn.

KWAADWILLENDE GEESTEN
Vodunpriesters behandelen ernstige psychische klachten volgens een op de totaliteit gericht therapieconcept. Ze betrekken de specifieke omstandigheden van de patiënt in het geheel en vormen zo een beeld van de persoon en de ziekte. In de loop van vaak langdurige ceremonies raken ze meer en meer vertrouwd met de ziekte en het levensverhaal daarachter. Gewoonlijk vormen waarzeggerij, in een toestand van trance, en daarop volgende helingrituelen het middelpunt. Absolute voorwaarde hierbij is dat ze moeten worden uitgevoerd in het bijzijn en onder actieve deelname van de naaste familieleden of het gehele dorp. Tijdens meerdaagse dans- en offerceremonies openbaren geesten en goden, via een door de Vodunpriester aangewezen persoon (het medium), de oorzaak van de kwaal en geven ze aanwijzingen over de verdere behandeling.

FETISJ ALS TEGENKRACHT
Voor een succesvol verloop van een Vodun genezingsritueel is het gebruik van fetisjen onontbeerlijk. Fetisjen zijn objecten die na rituele handelingen de behuizing vormen van persoonlijke machten of goddelijke krachten. Het begrip is verbonden met 19e-eeuwse theorieën van missionarissen en zendelingen die in het West-Afrikaanse fetisjisme een voorstadium van religie zagen. De meeste fetisjen zijn zorgvuldig gekozen samenstellingen van werkzaam geachte materialen zoals glas, schelpen, horens, slotjes, botjes, tanden, pigmentstoffen, dierenschedels, bloed, mest, haren, spijkers, sleutels, textiel en spiegeltjes. De ‘goede’ combinatie van materialen geeft de fetisj de kracht die het nodig heeft om z’n werk te doen. In een vastomlijnd ritueel, begeleid door spreuken en offers, worden de losse voorwerpen door de Vodunpriester ‘vastgezet’. Pas als het object op deze manier is verzadigd met kracht, kan de negatieve invloed van de kwaadwillende geest(en) worden teruggedrongen.

FETISJ TER BESCHERMING VAN INDIVIDU EN DORP
In de onzekerheden van alledag ervaren miljoenen Vodungelovigen de voortdurende aanwezigheid van krachten van goden, voorouders en geesten. Vooral in de grotere steden, waar zoveel afhangt van een maatschappelijke carrière, wenden velen zich tot een Vodunpriester om zich te beschermen tegen ongeluk en tegenslag of daar van bevrijd te worden. Hiervoor zijn rituele handelingen nodig met heilig water, geneeskrachtige kruiden en offergaven. Na de ceremonie wordt een klein gedeelte in een leren buideltje gestopt. Met deze talisman, die op het lichaam wordt gedragen, staat de eigenaar onder speciale bescherming van een van de talrijke Vodun waardoor zijn lot een andere wending krijgt.
FETISJ ALS VERERINGSOBJECT
Voor het voortbestaan van een gemeenschap spelen voorouders een essentiële rol. Als de nood aan de man is, richt men zich met behulp van drank- en spijsoffers tot de voorouders in het zekere vertrouwen dat zij hulp bieden. Vaak verschijnen ze in een droom; dan geven ze raad, delen waardevolle inlichtingen of waarschuwen voor gevaar. Het ligt dan ook voor de hand dat de betrekkingen met hen goed moeten worden onderhouden. Veel gemeenschappen wijden speciale ijzeren altaren (asen) aan hun voorouders. Een asen bestaat uit een metalen staaf met aan de bovenzijde een rond plateau. Op het metalen plateau zijn figuren en objecten aangebracht die de levensgeschiedenis of de bijzondere prestaties van een voorouder uitbeelden. Alle elementen hebben met elkaar te maken en moeten altijd als één geheel worden gezien. Asen zijn niet alleen gedenktekens voor de gestorvenen. Ze vormen ook een plaats, waarnaar de zielen kunnen terugkeren om aan het gemeenschapsleven deel te nemen.
